ABRAZOS (HALAUKSET)

Abrazos (Halaukset)

Kinetic installation, reed, wool and recycled motors, 60cm x 40cm x 160cm, 2023 Made in collaboration with Renzo Signori (Koyne Programm)

This piece is the result of a collaborative process during the North-South-Circuit Project as part of the Koyne Programm organized by the Arcaica Association in Finland.

Arcaica strives for long-term and sustainable work in the field of art, focusing on the development and production of cultural projects and artistic work. Its points of interest are sustainability and technology.

Supported by Arcaica, I stayed on the island of Örö at the Ores Residency in Finland in 2022, where I explored and weaved different materials from the island’s environment, like reeds, seaweed, and feathers. The distances and displacement of materials from their natural habitat and the relationship between art, nature, and technology were recurrent questions during my stay. To visibilize these questionings, Renzo Signori and I started exploring the idea of movement in the weaved materials and its possibilities in time.

We combined the reeds of the island with recycled motors we had from Peru and choreographed a very slow movement, almost imperceptible at first sight, but if you take the time, you can see it. And so the piece Abrazos (Halaukset) was born.

This kinetic weaving invites us to reflect on distance as well as geological, human, and artificial time.
