Handweaving, mixed wool, metal stick, video projection and sound, 250cm x 180cm, 2021 Developed video projection in collaboration with Caleb Mahomed, 2023 Developed sound in collaboration with Uğur Kepenek, 2025

Part of the collection of the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf.

This work is a tribute to the sea, its beauty, its richness, its majesty, and its meditative power. And at the same time, a call into action to preserve these ecosystems. By projecting some destruction (sea pollution, overfishing) scenes interleaved with idyllic ocean scenes I try to create a contrast that will make the viewer reflect on this topic.

The projection creates at the same time a lights and shadows mosaic on the wall behind the weaving. Giving an extra layer of image: the weaving, the projection, and the shadows. The installation is accompanied by a surrounding sound of deep underwater ambiance, that can be perceived differently by the viewer: either as a relaxing, meditative sound or as an anguished, distressing one.

This work was first shown on World Ocean’s Day 2021.
