ARE WE FEELING BLUE? AN ODE TO THE SEA

Are we feeling blue? An ode to the sea

Handweaving, mixed wool, 250cm x 180cm, 2021 Video projection (20min) in collaboration with Caleb Mahomed, 2023

This work is a tribute to the sea, its beauty, its richness, its majesty, and its meditative power. But, at the same time, oceans are being enormously polluted, animals are being overfished and the variety of ecosystems is dying. By projecting some of these destruction scenes interleaved with idyllic ocean scenes I try to create a contrast that will make the viewer reflect on this topic.

The installation is accompanied by a surrounding sound of deep underwater ambiance, that can be perceived differently by the viewer: either as a relaxing, meditative sound or as an anguished, distressing one.

The projection creates at the same time a lights and shadows mosaic on the wall behind the weaving. Giving an extra layer of image: the weaving, the projection, and the shadows.

This is my way of creating awareness and giving attention to the environmental issues happening in the oceans around the world. This is my ode to the sea.

This work was first shown on World Ocean’s Day 2021.

In 2023 Caleb Mahomed and I collaborated and developed a new part for the video. Through videomapping and motion graphics Caleb gave life to the weaving, making it breathe and dance.
